By necessity, during the process of developing the RF Planning Tool Athena, our personel invented a new way to compress terrain data. This method allowed for many more files to be stored on a single hard drive than was possible using native format DEMs or SDTS quads. Our compression technique offes a 2.3:1 improvement over SDTS and a 9:1 improvement over native format USGS DEM data. Furthermore, the compression process detects and corrects many of the errors inherent is the USGS sorce data including pathalogical sink-holes and incorrect georeferencing.
Wave Concepts is pleased to announce the availability of this data at a low cost to the general public. While the compression format is proprietary, customers may download a free translator and/or SDK for use in a development environment. The translator will extract quads to several common formats, and the SDK will allow developers to extract elevation data programatically without having to decompress the quads.
Currently, data is only available for US. However, the compression technique is effective on any high resolution format. Pleas contact us if you are in need of compression on another data format.
